Important Information About Supplementation

  • There is very little regulation in the supplement industry by the FDA

  • Supplements go to market without being tested for quality, safety for purity

  • Dietary supplements are considered safe until proven unsafe. This means many supplements on the market are unsafe, but will remain on shelves for years (scary stuff)

  • This is why it is so important to only use supplements from *professional brands (they can be purchased at a discount on Fullscript)

  • When looking for supplements make sure they don't have the following added ingredients: hydrogenated oils, coloring: red 40, blue 2, Yellow 5, artificial flavors, gluten, corn, soy

  • Some supplements have expired ingredients, cross-contamination, improper labels, and/or a lack of active ingredient(s)

  • Some have even been found to contain lead, mercury and prescription-grade drugs

Supplements to avoid when working on hormonal balance.

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oils)
a. PUFA’s are unstable fats. This means they oxidize easily when exposed to light, heat and oxygen. Oxidized fats cause free radicals, which cause unwanted symptoms and disease.
b. Poor quality fish oils can become rancid from improper processing and storage techniques. This can cause oxidative stress and inflammation in your body.
c. They can be hard for an overworked liver to break down. When the liver is functioning optimally, high-quality omega-3 supplements can be a part of a healthy supplement regimen.
d. It is best to get omega-3 through your diet.
i. Salmon, Mackerel, Seabass, Herring, Oysters, Sardines, Eggs, Chia Seeds, Hemp Seeds, Spinach, Seaweed, Kidney beans, Walnuts

2. Evening Primrose Oil
a. Processed omega-6 fatty acid
b. Can cause more inflammation

3. B-Vitamins
a. Best to get from food (liver, meat, fish, poultry, desiccated liver)
b. Can stimulate the adrenals if you’re already stressed

4. Multi-Vitamins
a. Food synergy: vitamins and minerals in food work together synergistically. When vitamins are consumed alone, or with other nutrients that don’t work with them synergistically, they’re not as effective.
b. Multi-vitamins are typically derived from low quality sources.
c. Some sources are difficult for your body to convert into active
forms, which is just a waste of your money.
d. Did you know “that most vitamin B1 supplements are made from
derivatives of coal tar? That ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is made by
reacting high-fructose corn syrup with sulfuric acid? That many iron
supplements are made from rusty nails? (Kresser, 2019)” Source

5. Iron
a. Only take if you’re are anemic and your doctor has prescribed it to
you.
b. Iron has been added to many processed foods, i.e. cereal, bread
and flour for many years. This means that many women have iron
overload.
c. Our tissues store excess iron which can lead to premature aging.

6. Vitamin D
a. Vitamin D is a hormone that is best to get through sun exposure
(aim for 10-20 minutes of midday sun on spf free skin daily)
b. Vitamin D is fat soluble and is best absorbed from whole foods that
contain vitamin D and fat. Egg yolks, salmon, mackerel, beef liver

7. Vitex, also known as Chasteberry
a. Can elevate lutenizing hormone and increase progesterone.
b. Depending on your other hormone levels, Vitex can be helpful or
detrimental to your symptoms. It is best to avoid and focus on gut
healing and inflammation.

8. Birth Control
a. Birth control depletes B-vitamins, antioxidants and minerals, which
are needed for hormonal balance, liver detoxification, thyroid
function, immune system regulation and tissue repair.
b. They do not treat hormonal imbalances, they disguise them.
c. They also damage the gut lining, allowing for bacteria and yeast
overgrowth.
d. Side effects include blood clots, cardiovascular events, severe
abdominal pain, breast pain, headaches, heavy menstruation,
irregular periods, nausea, mood changes and depression.

9. Spironolactone: this drug is intended to treat heart failure and high
blood pressure by managing sodium and potassium levels. Source
a. Studies have found that it causes tumors in animals
b. Side effects include lightheadedness, dizziness, anxiety, depression
and hair loss. Source

10. Antibiotics: Tetracycline (Doxycycline, minocycline, morgidox or
macrolide)- these antibiotics fight bacteria in the body
a. Antibiotics kill the good bacteria along with the bad, leading to
dysbiosis in the gut (imbalance of good and bad gut bacteria).
b. Side effects include liver problems, stomach pain, fast heartbeat,
dizziness and colitis.

11. Isotretinoin (Accutane): is a form of vitamin A that works by decreasing
sebum output by the sebaceous glands.
a. Side effects include depression, liver disease, heart disease,
osteoporosis, intestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel
disease (IBD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), extreme dryness,
nosebleeds, vision problems, joint pain, birth defects, and the list
goes on and on…Source
